It promised a great mouth watering final between a young German - Sabine Lisicki, who had swept aside 3 top seeds, including the top seed - Serena Williams, enroute to the Final. A tennis player who showed tremendous guts and determination to come from behind in the third set to defeat Serena and Radwanska. We who had witnessed her tenacious play were looking forward to another exciting display of passionate and fearless tennis.
However what we had not expected was Marion Bartoli, a French girl, a the runner up in 2007, to come out with all guns blazing.
Nothing worked for Lisicki today. Her serve, her drop shots, her backhand and forehand all let her down. Lisicki was also not moving with the fluency that we were used to. She was overwhelmed by the occasion. She just could not get going on centre court.
On the other hand Bartoli ensured that she returned serve very well, she moved well, countered the drop shots with drop shots of her own, she kept the ball on Lisicki's backhand and also kept Lisicki moving from side to side. Bartoli did everything right. She stayed focused, she remained calm and did the basics very well. Bartoli was all business today and she had a great day at the office.
It was all too much for Lisicki. I cannot remember another Final where the losing Finalist was so overcome with emotion that she was crying on court during the match.
Bartoli won 6-1 and 6-4.
However I am still convinced that we will see a lot more of Sabine Lisicki in the future when she starts her winning ways. She is definitely a future Grand Slam Champ. The only question is when?
