They attacked him. They separated him from his team. They controlled the pack. They rode from start to finish keeping him controlled in their midst. They tried every trick in the book to break him.
But Chris Froome took everything they threw at him and kept coming back for more. He withstood the successive attacks and eventually finished the race along with the best of the rest.
He did not lose a single second to his rival.
Or better yet - his rivals could not gain a single second from the Yellow Jersey even after controlling the race for 165kms.
To a great extent it reminded me of Ali's fight in Zaire with Foreman. Ali withstood all that George had to throw at him and when George had nothing more left in the tank, Ali came back with all guns blazing to take the fight to and away from George.
Valverde, Contador, Cadel Evans, Andy Schleck and the others are experiencing the inevitable. And they can do nothing about it.
Chris Froome seems so domineering over the mountains that it does not look like anyone can stop him from winning.
The frightening thing to witness today was Froome was cycling without any of his SKY Team mates riding alongside to help in anyway. They were all blown away by the tactics of the Spanish teams of Valverde and Contador. Only Froome held the SKY racing colours flying high. And what a performance it was.
Tomorrow is a rest day. A day of reckoning for all the riders except Chris Froome.
